Day 4 - Pray to Break the Spirit of Divination

Concept of the Spirit of Divination

This spirit operates when a person interacts or fellowships with demons—seeking answers from them and being influenced or compelled by them. The target or source of this connection is the spirit of divination. This spirit operates when a person interacts or fellowships with demons—seeking answers from them and being influenced or compelled by them. The target or source of this connection is the spirit of divination.

The King James Version (KJV) translates this spirit as "familiar spirits":

"Give no regard to mediums and familiar spirits; do not seek after them, to be defiled by them: I am the Lord your God." (Leviticus 19:31, KJV)

Paul cast out a spirit of divination from a slave girl in Philippi, a spirit that had enabled her to bring great profit to her masters through fortune-telling. (Acts 16:16)

People often seek to profit from the spirit of divination, but in the end, this spirit leads them down to destruction and hell.

Manifestations and Causes of the Spirit of Divination:

Fortune-telling involves predicting a person’s future based on their birth date and time (commonly referred to as “Bazi” or Eight Characters), to determine upcoming blessings or calamities.

Divination uses tools or methods—such as tortoise shells, coins, bamboo sticks, tarot cards, or astrology—to interpret signs and omens in order to reveal one’s fate and offer guidance.

Consulting the dead (necromancy) is based on the belief that people become “spirits” after death, and through mediums or spiritists, these spirits are supposedly called upon to speak through the living, answering questions about the unknown.

Causes and Essence:

1.Desire to Know the Future

Whether it’s fortune-telling, divination, or consulting the dead, they all share a common motivation: the desire to know the future in order to pursue blessings and avoid calamities. The essence of these practices is that the devil uses them to replace God’s rightful position in a person’s life. However...

Their sorrows shall be multiplied who hasten after another god.( Psalm 16:4)

The secret things belong to the Lord our God, but those things which are revealed belong to us and to our children forever, that we may do all the words of this law. (Deuteronomy 29:2)

And in Your book they all were written,The days fashioned for me,When as yet there were none

of them. (Psalm 139:16)

God already knows all our days and everything we will face. He is sovereign over all things. Therefore, we have no need to seek guidance from evil spirits through fortune-telling, divination, or consulting the dead.

2. Rebellion Against God

Practices such as fortune-telling, divination, and consulting the dead are acts of open rebellion against God. The first and second of the Ten Commandments clearly state: “You shall have no other gods before Me. You shall not make for yourself a carved image.”

Behind fortune-telling, divination, and necromancy are demonic forces. The devil’s very name means “the adversary”—he is the one who resists and opposes God.

In which you once walked according to the [a]course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, the spirit who now works in the sons of disobedience, (Ephesians 2:2)

Behind these practices is a ruler of the kingdom of the air, the evil spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

The goal of these evil spirits is to draw people into believing in them, and ultimately into worshiping them. Some of us in the past were once under the influence of such spirits—living in ignorance and spiritual blindness. At that time, God overlooked our lack of understanding. But now that we have been redeemed by Christ, we must decisively break off and remove all practices and influences that oppose God.

3.Uncertainty About the Future

As human knowledge and abilities increase, so does the level of competition in the world. At the same time, uncertainty has grown, and people increasingly feel a lack of security.

Many feel it is harder than ever to encounter opportunities, to seize them when they arise, or to handle the challenges of life and destiny. As a result, people often turn to spiritual shortcuts—seeking comfort and emotional relief, hoping to change their fate or escape the setbacks and failures they face in life.

4.Inner Emptiness of the Soul

While material civilization advances rapidly in modern times, the human spirit remains impoverished. The abundance of outward material wealth contrasts sharply with the inner emptiness of the soul, creating a deep gap. As a result, people instinctively yearn for the mysterious spiritual realm, seeking fulfillment and meaning.

5.A Mindset of Quick Gains

The desire for quick success and immediate results gives rise to a strong fear of gain and loss. This mindset easily drives people to turn to fortune-telling, divination, and consulting the dead.

General Classification of Fortune-Telling, Divination, and Consulting Spirits

Fortune-Telling

Fortune-telling refers to practices that use personal information such as facial features, palm lines, date and time of birth (known as "Ba Zi"), and the number of strokes in one's name—combined with esoteric calculation methods to predict a person's fate, including blessings and misfortunes. It falls under the category of metaphysics. The academic study of fortune-telling is called "Yi Studies" (易学), which centers on theories like Yin-Yang, the Five Elements, the Heavenly Stems and Earthly Branches, and the Bagua (Eight Trigrams) from Fuxi. In ancient China, those who specialized in fortune-telling were known as "fortune-telling masters" (算命先生).

Narrowly defined, fortune-telling refers specifically to predictions based on a person’s birth data (Ba Zi). Broadly defined, it includes a wide and complex range of techniques and systems.

Physiognomy

This practice analyzes a person's facial features, palm lines, bone structure, and body posture to assess their personality traits, innate talents, and health conditions, in order to predict whether a person has a good or bad character and whether their destiny is fortunate or unfortunate.

Astrology

Ancient people believed that nature is closely related to human destiny. Therefore, they often observed natural phenomena to predict life and death, blessings and misfortunes. The most common methods include astrology and feng shui.

Character Analysis

This method uses the number of strokes in a person’s name, combined with the I Ching, Yin-Yang, and the Five Elements, to interpret fate and fortune. Some also use the Eight Characters (Ba Zi)—a system based on one's birth time—to calculate destiny. If the Ba Zi align well, it is considered highly auspicious; if not, it indicates great misfortune.

Divination Techniques

Qi Men Dun Jia (奇门遁甲) is a complex Chinese metaphysical system used to determine auspicious timing and spatial positioning.

Spirit Communication and Mediumship

Practices such as spirit communication, summoning the dead, invoking deities, crossing into the underworld, speaking with the deceased, spirit possession, and ghost manifestations are all collectively referred to in the Bible as “consulting the dead” or “having fellowship with spirits.” This means attempting to call back the souls of the dead to speak with the living.
(However, in reality, it is not the soul of the deceased that returns, but an evil spirit impersonating that person.)

Divination

This involves using tools such as tortoise shells, coins, bamboo sticks, cards, and other symbolic objects or omens to predict future blessings or disasters.

Categories of Divination (from Wikipedia):

  • Prediction and Prognostics "The most primitive, clumsy, yet most enduring method is the recording of a series of strange events."Ancient Chinese history often documented unusual occurrences, natural changes, and other information. Government institutions in ancient China used these records to predict long-term strategic matters. Many modern scientific developments have their roots in such ancient forms of 'divination.' This conclusion is supported by the research of Joseph Needham.

·       Drawing Lots (Casting Lots)

·       This can involve objects like wooden sticks, bones, stones, or beans. Many modern board and card games evolved from these types of divinatory practices.

·       Augury
This type of divination provides predictions and can be qualitative (e.g., based on shapes or proximity to an object).
Dowsing (divining with sticks) developed from this practice. In ancient Rome, particularly in the Etruscan civilization, priests practiced haruspicy, which involved inspecting the entrails of sacrificial animals (specifically extispicy) to determine whether the meat was fresh and acceptable for the gods.

·       Free-form Divination

·       This type of divination doesn’t follow any fixed method and is often a variation or extension of other types.  The inspiration usually comes from what the diviner randomly sees or hears. Some Christians and members of other religions use Bibliomancy (divining with the Bible) — asking a question, then opening the Bible at random for insight. Other examples include observing energy or aura (Qi), New Age Feng Shui, intuition, and Taoist talismans.

The most common form is astrology, generally divided into Indian astrology or Vedic astrology (Jyotish), Western astrology, and Chinese astrology. In addition to these three systems, many other civilizations have their own forms of astrology.

Methods of Divination

·       Means of divination can include stars, energy (qi), salt, books, mirrors, animals such as roosters or parrots, and more.

·       In China, qi-based divination can utilize almost anything imaginable—astronomy, geography, the Nine Provinces and Eight Trigrams, birth and death, sickness and health, rise and fall, success and failure—all can be used for divination.

Schools of Divination

In China, the following methods of divination are common:

·       Divination by casting lots (卜筮): This involves using tools like turtle shells or yarrow stalks to predict events through the Eight Trigrams. Different methods were used in different historical periods, and there were innovations over time—for example, it is said that Dongfang Shuo’s Classic of Spirit Chess (灵棋经) used specially made chess pieces and incantations for divination.

·       Physiognomy (相术): This involves predicting fortune or misfortune by observing a person’s demeanor, temperament, facial features, and physical characteristics.

·       Astrology (占星): Known in China as Seven Governors and Four Remainders (七政四余), astrology was primarily used to reveal the nation's stability, the ruler’s fortune or disaster, and the peace or unrest of the realm. Early Chinese astrology was closely linked to astronomy, but the two gradually diverged over time.

·       Fu Ji (扶乩): This is spirit-writing divination, where a sieve with a willow brush attached is used by mediums through ritual to "communicate with deities," writing their messages onto a sand tray.

  • Drawing Lots (求签): At temples, after presenting their problems to the deity, people draw lots containing words or poems (commonly known as “divination poems”) representing the deity’s will. They may also use jiaobei (moon blocks) to confirm the result.

  • Character Divination (测字): The diviner interprets Chinese characters provided by the seeker to determine the auspiciousness of the issue.

  • Astrological Fate Reading (星命): This involves using a person's birth date, time, and geographic location in analogy with nature to predict outcomes.

  • Dream Interpretation (占梦): Based on the content of dreams, comparisons are drawn with nature or events to derive predictive insights.

  • Observing Qi (望气): Observing the color and patterns of the sky, primarily used in ancient times to predict the outcomes of wars; such methods were essential in ancient military texts.

  • Sound Divination (音律): Using sounds or their qualities to predict or interpret human affairs.

  • Portents and Omens (符瑞): Predicting fortune or disaster for individuals or nations based on unusual occurrences. These signs were often exploited for political purposes, such as in the Dazexiang Uprising led by Chen Sheng and Wu Guang.

  • Children’s Rhymes (童谣): In the Han dynasty, children’s rhymes were believed to predict good or bad fortune. This is why in Romance of the Three Kingdoms, there are many prophetic examples involving rhymes. These are generally classified as a form of chenwei prophecy (hidden or coded prophecies).

Prayer to Break the Spirit of Divination

In the name of Jesus Christ, I break every sacrifice made by me, my family, and my ancestors to all dark altars. I break the power of all offerings—whether food, wine, anointing oil, or money. I break the use of incense burners, ritual instruments, wooden fish, flags, divination blocks (jiaobei), and I cancel the power of used talismans, incense sachets, ashes in water, divination lots, candles, incense sticks, lamps, spiritual names received, and scriptures recited.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I annul every idol name, incantation, petition, vow, declaration, and oath spoken from our lips. I cancel every act of bowing, kneeling, putting palms together, or showing reverence to idols. I declare in the holy name of Jesus Christ that all these things are null and void, and they shall no longer have any influence over me—whether in the spiritual or physical realm. I also break every covenant made with the enemy, the devil behind all idolatry, and I declare that all these agreements are null and void, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I break and cancel every movement, physical posture, sitting position, hand gesture, recited formula, mantra, and the chanting of the Heart Sutra that I, my family, or my ancestors practiced through Qigong. I declare them completely null and void. In the holy name of Jesus Christ, I renounce all the belief systems related to Qigong that I or my ancestors once trusted, as well as any supernatural powers gained through the practice of Qigong or martial arts.

I also break, in the name of Jesus Christ, every belief system and spiritual power rooted in Taoism and Buddhism. I cancel every form of divination, fortune-telling, Feng Shui (name specific practices you have participated in), and every act of occult healing we were involved in—including spirit-calling rituals, drinking talisman water, using amulets or paper charms, soul-recall rituals, exorcism rituals, magic practices, and Qigong healing. I declare in Jesus’ name that every prophetic word spoken through these practices over me and my descendants is broken and made null and void. I also break the influence of every Feng Shui-related construction, placement, or arrangement performed by my ancestors or family. I declare that they will no longer have any effect on me or my household, in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I also break and renounce the power of all ungodly ritual objects used in ceremonies that are not pleasing to God—such as dolls, personal items, hair, clothing, talismans, spells, mantras, scriptures, rice, blood, wine (and name any other items or pagan objects that were used but not listed here). I break the power of the evil spirits attached to these objects. I also break every covenant that was made with the enemy, demons, or unclean spirits through the use of these items, charms, blood, wine, or scriptures.

If any of my family members or ancestors ever served as priests or religious workers for false gods or false religions—such as monks, nuns, Taoist priests or priestesses, mediums, spirit-channelers, temple keepers, fortune tellers, diviners, or religious scholars—or if they promoted false religions by selling idols, offering items to idols, carving idols, building temples, or performing religious operas and ceremonies, then in the name of Jesus Christ, I now break and cancel all spiritual covenants, objects, prayers, vows, oaths, declarations, initiations, and conversion rites associated with those identities and activities. I also cancel any financial gain or benefit received from such practices, and I break every covenant made with the enemy and demonic forces through those means. I declare that they are completely null and void, in the holy name of Jesus Christ. Amen.

I also renounce the identities and positions that my ancestors received as priests or preachers of false gods or false religions, as well as the honor and glory that came from man. In the name of Jesus Christ, I declare that I have been chosen by Abba Father. I am a royal priesthood in the Kingdom of God, a citizen of His holy nation, and a member of God's household.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I command all evil spirits, idols, and every familial spirit that I or my family and ancestors have ever invited in — including guardian spirits, familiar spirits, spirits invited through practicing martial arts or qigong, spirits brought in through belief in feng shui, fortune-telling, sorcery, witchcraft, or communicating with the dead; spirits that entered through traditional (pagan) healing practices or occult healing; and spirits brought in through serving as priests or promoters of false gods or false religions — I command all of you to leave me now and go to the place where the Lord Jesus Christ commands you to go. You are never to return or trouble anyone again. I do not need you, and I do not belong to you. I belong to Jesus Christ, and to Him alone. In the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!

Prayer to Break the Power of Idol Worship and Evil Spirits

Dear Abba Father, I confess that I, my family, and my ancestors have followed the traditions and customs of Chinese culture. During festivals and traditional holidays such as the Lunar New Year, Dragon Boat Festival, Qingming (Tomb-Sweeping Day), Ghost Festival, or the death anniversaries of our loved ones, we have engaged in ancestral worship — visiting graves, offering incense, burning spirit money and paper gold ingots, setting up altars or ancestral tablets, and offering gifts, water, wine, fruits, and other food as sacrifices to our ancestors. We have even erected images or built ancestral temples and shrines for them.

During these festivals or anniversaries, we have participated in ancestral rites held in ancestral halls or temples, expressing Confucian and Taoist concepts of filial piety. We bowed, knelt, and worshipped ancestors during rituals, praying to their spirits for peace, blessings, and protection. At funerals, we set up memorial halls or spiritual tablets for the deceased for worship, prepared offerings and sacrifices, lit candles and incense, and even invited Taoist priests or Buddhist monks to chant scriptures for the dead and hired mourners to cry.

I confess that all these practices and customs are rooted in belief in false religions, worship of the dead, and communication with the dead — which are sins of spiritism. They are sins that invite evil spirits and occult influences into our family line, and they open the door for generational evil spirits to enter us and our descendants. Lord, I ask for Your forgiveness for all these sins. Please cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I break and cancel all of these acts — every sacrifice, ritual, and celebration that I, my ancestors, and my family have ever performed toward ancestral tablets, altars, statues, portraits, or photos of deceased relatives. I cancel every altar that was erected, every offering and food item that was presented, every drink offering of water or wine, every incense burner that was used, every piece of spirit money that was burned, every candle that was lit, every stick of incense that was offered, and every word of scripture or incantation chanted by Taoist priests or Buddhist monks. I cancel every word and phrase recited, every use of wooden fish, bells, or ritual instruments, and every act of petitioning, vow-making, declaration, or oath. I nullify every bowing, prostration, and kneeling act in Jesus’ name.

Now, in the name of Jesus Christ, I declare all of these acts null and void. I apply the precious blood of Jesus to completely cover and erase them. I break their power and cancel every curse in Jesus’ name. I bind every evil spirit and unclean spirit that was invited in through these ignorant and foolish rituals, declarations, and vows. I command them to be completely bound and sent to the feet of the Lord Jesus. Let the cross of Jesus Christ stand between me and them, and let them no longer influence me or my descendants.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I break and cancel every covenant made through these rituals, objects, oaths, mourning speeches, declarations, vows, and all pacts made with death and the realm of the dead. I declare them fully broken and cancelled.

Because I stand in repentance before God for myself and on behalf of my ancestors — confessing our sins and fully forgiving — I now proclaim that all of these things are utterly powerless, ineffective, and have no authority, portion, place, or remembrance in our lives or in our family line, both in the spiritual realm and in the physical realm. I claim the blood of Jesus Christ shed on the cross to fully break, crush, and cancel all of them. The punishment that brought me and my descendants peace was upon Jesus. By His stripes, we and our descendants are healed. On the cross, Jesus became our sin offering, guilt offering, and atoning sacrifice. He has borne all curses and death for me, my children, and my family line. In the name of Jesus Christ I pray, Amen!

Lord Jesus, thank You for forgiving all my sins and cleansing me from all unrighteousness. Now, by an act of my will, I choose to forgive my parents, ancestors, relatives, and everyone who has ever influenced me to worship ancestors, to offer sacrifices to the dead, or who taught and led us into cultural and traditional Chinese practices that offended God — through their words, rituals, or actions. I forgive each of these people and release them into the freedom of my forgiveness.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I command all the power of death, the realm of the dead, and every ancestral spirit, guardian spirit, idol, and demonic power that was invited in by my ancestors — leave me and my descendants completely, right now.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I command and give orders to all evil spirits that have entered through the practice of Qigong, yoga, all kinds of spirit-invoking and energy-cultivating activities; spirits that have come through belief in feng shui and fortune-telling; and spirits of curses and death brought by disasters, grief, fear, sorrow, and despair — I now command you all to leave! Leave my home, leave me and my descendants, and go to the place where the Lord Jesus commands you to go. You are never permitted to return or disturb any of us again.

I now renounce you. I surrender the lordship of my life, my family, and the authority over my children and descendants to my Lord Jesus Christ. We no longer belong to you or to any powers of darkness. You have no power, no claim, no place, and no position in my life, in my family, or among my descendants. If you try to return to harass or invade again, you are illegal intruders, and I will strike you down and burn you by the name of Jesus!

This prayer is made in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!

Prayer to Break Blood Covenants with the Devil

Abba Father, on behalf of my family and ancestors, I confess and repent for every blood covenant made with the enemy.

I declare: I renounce every oath and covenant made by my ancestors, and I break the power of every word and vow. I declare that they are completely nullified and rendered powerless by the covenant established through the blood of Jesus.

I declare: From this day forward, the only eternal covenant we recognize is the one established by the precious blood of Jesus. Lord Jesus, thank You for the everlasting covenant sealed by Your blood, which has replaced and canceled every covenant that offended You. I pray this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!

Lord, please guard our hearts above all else. Reign and rule in our hearts, minds, and thoughts. I pray all of this in the name of Jesus Christ. Amen!

Abba Father, on behalf of myself, my family, and my ancestors, I confess and repent for the sins of possibly drinking human blood, eating human flesh, consuming animal blood, and making sacrifices using water, rice, blood, or other items to the devil, false gods, evil spirits, at temples, gravesites, and unlawful altars. I also repent for any acts of spiritism or raising evil spirits (known as "little ghosts").

I declare that I renounce and forsake all these sins—especially the shedding of innocent blood, drinking human blood, eating human flesh, consuming animal blood, and offering unlawful sacrifices and spiritual transactions before false gods, demons, temples, graves, and illegal altars. In the name of Jesus Christ, I now break every curse brought upon us through these sinful acts and behaviors.

In particular, I break all blood-related curses that may be affecting me, my family, and my children. Lord, please cleanse our bloodline with Your precious blood. Wash away all our iniquities and sins. I plead the blood of Jesus over our lineage and declare that every blood curse is broken. May the cross of Jesus take upon and bring an end to all these curses. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen!

Prayer to Break the Curse of Seeking Offspring from Idols

Abba Father, on behalf of myself and my family and ancestors, I repent for the sin of seeking offspring in idol temples and on unlawful altars. I confess and repent before You for the sins of asking idols for fertility, conception, and children. I renounce all such sinful acts and ask for Your forgiveness.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I apply the power of the blood of Jesus and the authority of the cross to break every curse brought by these sins. I break every curse that has defiled our bodies through these actions. I break every curse brought by words spoken in prayers to idols and evil spirits asking for descendants. I also break every generational curse passed on to our children and descendants through these rituals and words.

I now declare: My descendants and I were created by God in the womb; it is the Lord who brought us forth from our mother’s womb. As for me and my descendants—our lives, our breath, our days, our health, our identity, and our DNA—we all belong to the Lord. We have no connection or relationship with demons or evil spirits. By the blood of Jesus and the power of the cross, I completely sever and cut off every tie and curse associated with them.

I declare that as for me and my descendants, we have been redeemed and cleansed by the blood of the Lamb. We are no longer slaves to sin, nor will we be held in lifelong slavery by the fear of death. I declare that my descendants, my spouse, and every member of my household belong to God and will serve the Lord. In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.

May the precious blood of Jesus be thickly applied to cover us—covering the healing and deliverance that God Himself has done today, and breaking, cleansing, and abolishing all covenants with evil spirits, unclean spirits, and the powers of darkness. Bring us back into Your covenant of redemption, Lord. Cover us with Your blood and protect us through Your everlasting covenant.

In the name of Jesus Christ, I pray. Amen.
